How to use the Token Counter
Large language models do not read words; they read tokens, which are chunks of characters produced by a tokenizer. Pricing, rate limits and context-window limits are all measured in tokens, so knowing the count before you send a long document saves money and avoids truncation errors. This token counter gives a fast estimate for any text you paste, along with word, character and line counts.
The estimate uses widely published rules of thumb: for English, one token is about four characters or roughly three quarters of a word with modern BPE tokenizers such as those used by GPT-4o, Claude and Llama 3. The tool combines a character-based and a word-based estimate and also counts punctuation and digits, which often split into extra tokens. Code, non-Latin scripts and unusual formatting usually use more tokens than plain English, so treat the number as a planning figure, typically within about 10–15% of the exact tokenizer result.
